Hydrosol
Hydrosols are a byproduct of plant distillation, primarily obtained through steam distillation. Plant material such as leaves and branches are placed in a distiller, where heated water generates steam that pushes the volatile molecules of the plant upwards. The steam cools down and condenses into water, or hydrosol, with a few drops of precious essential oil floating on top. This oil, which contains the fat-soluble substances of the plant, is skimmed off and bottled.
Although milder than essential oils, hydrosols are stronger than herbal teas and can be used undiluted. They are suitable for pregnant women, small children, and even pets.
Products labeled as rose water are often just distilled water with added essential oil, sometimes artificially created. Trusted sources are essential for high-quality hydrosols. The scent intensity of pure hydrosols can vary depending on the production season.
